CONNOR CUP – A National Curlers Care Trophy Supporting Military Families
Curlers Care Bonspiels in Support of Military Families began in Parry Sound, Ontario March, 7 & 8, 2015. Ray Pavlove, from Parry Sound, Ontario, and an RCAF veteran (October 63 – August 66) was moved by a CBC radio documentary in the summer of 2014, which shared a shocking statistic – more Canadian Armed Forces personnel upon returning home from active combat in Afghanistan committed suicide than were killed in action in the Afghanistan War from 2001 to 2011. Ray spoke to friend and fellow Comrade, Tom Traversy (RCAF July 1969- October 1976) and together Ray and Tom, both curlers, decided to raise money and awareness in support of Military Families with a 2-4 Curling Bonspiel. They called it a 2-4 Curlers Care Bonspiel as there were two people on a team each throwing four rocks for four ends. The 2-4 format proved to be very successful and was particularly inviting to non curlers. Bill Connor from Connor Industries INC., a local steel fabrication and aluminum boat building company was invited to be the title sponsor. Bill quickly agreed. He and his staff have generously sponsored the Parry Sound Curlers Care Supporting Military Families Bonspiel since 2015. In 2019, Connor Industries proudly sponsored the CONNOR CUP, a National Curlers Care Trophy. Curling clubs in Canada hosting a Curlers Care Bonspiel Supporting Military Families are welcome to add the names of their winners to the Connor Cup. To date, seventeen Curlers Care Supporting Military Families Bonspiels have been held in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario raising over $100 000.00 with the names of the winners, Curling Club and the community hosting a Curlers Care Bonspiel are recognized on the Connor Cup. Curling Clubs in Canada are invited to host a Curlers Care Bonspiel and encouraged to direct all money raised to support local Military Families in their community through Registered Charitable organizations such as Military Family Resource Centres, Soldier On, Local Legions, Wounded Warriors, Canadian Forces Morale and Welfare Services or any other organization Supporting Military Families.
