Team Enman U18 Boys Curlers Care Jr. Ambassadors won the Stu Sells U18 Tankard at the Weston Golf and Country Club on December 1-3. The team went undefeated in the round robin posting a 4-0 record, then went on to claim the championship winning three more games in the playoffs. “Clutch shot making under pressure, focus and appropriate strategy decisions were clearly evident through out the entire weekend. I was very proud of the way they played, against some very stiff competition”, said Team manager Cory Randell.
We played in the Stu Sells U18 Tankard event this past weekend at the Weston Golf and Country Club in Toronto. So far this season, we’ve been building momentum for a while, placing in the quarter-finals, semi-finals and winning Consolation games, but we’ve yet to break through to a final.
Our first game Friday morning was against a Toronto team we’ve played before, but this was our first meeting of this season. We used our experience and strong hitting game to win 9-5.
The second game Friday was against the Sudbury team we seem to run into at every event. As all games against this tough team go, this one came down to the last shot, and we lost 5-3.
Saturday saw us start off bright and early against a young Toronto team that seems to get better every time we play them. Once again though, our experience and strong hitting led us to a 9-2 win.
Our second game on Saturday was against another Toronto team that we played for the first time in Orillia. We won that high-scoring game 10-7. This time we were determined to get the win that would secure us a playoff spot, and we came out on top 7-3.
Our 3-1 record in pool play, along with our shootout score, put us into the playoffs as the #3 seed. The quarter-final game was against a team from Ottawa. The game was really close. We were down 5-4 playing the 7th end when we scored a hugely important two points to take the lead into the final end. We played the 8th end perfectly and stole another point to win 7-5.
The semi-final game was against another really tough team that we expect to meet in these important games all season long. This was a low-scoring game, with both teams playing very well. Down 2-1 playing the 6th end we scored another important two points to take a 3-2 lead, then stole one more in the 7th end. We played the 8th end perfectly to run the other team out of rocks, and punch our ticket to the Championship final game for the first time this season.
The Championship final game was against, who else, but the Sudbury team we lost to on Friday afternoon. This was another back and forth game, with both teams making crucial shots at the right time. We were down 6-5 playing the 7th end when we made some high pressure shots to score three points. Up by two playing the final end we had to put our last shot in the right place to force the other skip into a tough hit. The shot was there for the win, but she missed it and we came out on top 9-6.
Our first event win of the season!
We played in the Orion U18 Slam event, October 27 – 29,2017 at the Galt Country Club.
We had some interesting ice conditions on Friday, when the Galt Country Club was experiencing problems with their ice-making equipment. The system thought the ice temperature was normal, when it was actually much warmer than it should have been. This caused the ice surface to become very slippery, and made throwing draw weight extremely difficult. Luckily, the ice-maker at Galt was able to get things under control by Saturday morning, so the rest of the event was played under the typically good conditions. Friday night’s game was quite the adventure, though…
Our first game was Friday morning, against a young team from Kitchener-Waterloo. We adapted to the quickly changing ice conditions and came out on top with a 7-4 win.
Our second game was against a team from Toronto who we haven’t played before. The ice was getting really bad by this time, and we had to throw the rocks almost as hard as we could just to get them down the ice. We were tied 4-4 in the final end, and made a draw on our last shot to steal the win 5-4.
The third game was against a team from Seaforth. We stuck to our game plan and outplayed them, winning 5-3.The final round-robin game was against a team from Niagara Falls, with three Provincial champions. We haven’t had much luck against this team in the past, but we brought our ‘A’ game out for this one, and won 11-7.
Our 4-0 record had us as the only undefeated team through the round-robin pool play, and we went into the quarter finals as the #1 seed. This brought us a match up against a tie-breaker winner, which turned out to be the team we played Saturday night.
The Chatham Granite Club joined with the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 642 to support veterans on Saturday March 4, 2017.
The event was open to curlers and non-curlers to show respect for those who have served, with nearly 40 people taking to the ice. A colour guard was also on hand for the opening. Different divisions were created based on playing experience, with each team made up of two people. Local News Article, click here
